Totally Awkward Tuesday

Well, it is week 2 of Totally Awkward Tuesday and I hope I am not the only one playing along today. For the details about the fabulous meme check out Tova Darling's blog. Check her blog for other participants too!

In case you missed the first entry last week, here is my totally awkward share all from last week.

My next totally awkward moment came to me just yesterday when my Mom and I were recalling some past hilarious moments of my life. Let's set the stage shall we?

Junior year in college. My two friends and I rented a house a few blocks from campus. It was about a hundred years old and was basically painted the colors of the apartment on the show Friends. We fell in love with it. But in with the love came the realities of an old old house. For one it was a block from The Strip (the bar scene in the college town) so frequently on weekend evenings you might here some drunken panderings from outside (this was mostly enjoyable and funny for us underagers inside the house). There was a scary small window that creeped me out endlessly. There were uneven doorways that my roommate scared me with after watching Signs with Mel Gibson. She could mimic that clicking sound and I was horrified. And there was a rare and unique flying hoping species of bug that was a hybrid of a grasshopper, cockroach, daddy long leg and spider that frequented the house (we actually took it to the Entymology lab at the school and they couldn't identify it!). Yuck. So there is the background. And here is the story:

One day we come home from class to find the house filled with an awkward smell. Yes. A smell. It is freakishly strong and overpowering the entire house. We are soon out on the porch hacking and coughing and basically freaking out. The smell was skunk. Yes. Skunk. After much stinkyness and holding our breath (cleaning the kitchen thinking it could be our nasty dishes in the sink) we called the landlord and they diagnosed it as a skunk having sprayed underneath the house. Most likely scared by a cat or something... And then the stench soaked up through the house like a sponge and filled every surface. Even months later you could open some box or something from the closet and smell skunk. It was horrifying.
Well, we clearly had to get it nuetralized and this would be happening the next day. Meanwhile we had a skunk house that we had to stay at and I am sad to tell you..we started to smell too.
It soaked into our clothes and our hair and it was brutal.
We could have lived through this (skipping classes and keeping indoors until nuetralized) except that one of the gals and I had a presentation final for one of our classes. Um...yeah and it was out of town, in a mansion, in front of a board of directors who were going to choose a design and really build the proposed plan. It was huge. And we were stinky.
The first horrifying thing is driving there in the car with four other girls who had to roll the windows down and had their eyes watering over the smell. The smell that was us.
humiliation at its best.
The second and most horrifying thing happened when we were taking the tour of the facility and we are walking around and this one girl keeps looking around in each room and saying, "Does anyone smell that? It smells like skunk or something..." to which I try to edge out of the room before anyone pins the stink on me. AWFUL. Finally after she has said it in about 5 more rooms and squinched her nose up a few times when it got stronger (i.e. I was standing too close) I finally said, "What? I don't smell anything?". My friends about lost it and we scooted our stinky selves out of there.
Have you ever smelled? Can you spell AWKWARD? There was nothing we could do. We were stuck in our skunkiness for 24 hours or so and still were blasted with it occasionally while we lived there.

Hope you enjoyed my Totally Skunky Story....
Join in the fun.

Home Sweet Home

At 11:30 pm last night our plane landed. By 12:45 am we were home and headed to bed. It was a good trip with lots of family, food and travel. We arrived on Tuesday night (with an hour plane delay) and spent the night with my Mom. The next morning we drove about 2 hours to my grandmother's house where we stayed until Thursday morning when we drove and hour and a half to my Dad's house where we stayed until Saturday morning when we drove 3 hours back to my Mom' s house and then we flew home yesterday. Are you tired just reading that? I am. And I was there for the real thing!

I have a lot of things that I can say about Christmas and family and how our vacation was. We did have a good time. Really. We did. But I somehow came home with the blues and it's not homesickness. Maybe it was just too many people and (illnesses) and chaos and travel. Maybe it was memories and drama and hectic lives. I guess it is just a bit much for me now. I live here with my husband and my puppy. We have a nice church, nice friends (fabulous friends!),decent jobs with nice people....etc. We live a quiet kind of life. Fun and active yes, but there is a lot of time just with each other and fun times with friends or colleagues that are just that with no strings. Maybe I am just getting older and more sensitive (Lord help me!) but it was all just too much for me this year. I am so tired and worn out. I just want to unpack my things, clean my house, finish my to-do lists and slip back into my routine. Routine. Why is that such a comforting word?

God Bless you all and I hope you had a wonderful Christmas.
I have lots of pictures to post so stay tuned!!!

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas....

(Edit: Thanks Steph for fixing my red eye photos! Check them out now...we don't look possessed anymore.)

Here are some pics of our candy cane striped presents under the tree and some of our pics that went on our Christmas card this year. Some made the cut while others didn't but I wanted to share some of our holiday fun!

These are a few of Kyle's presents that are already under the tree....

Here are the gifts we shipped to Kyle's family in South Dakota that we won't see this year.

Here is our little Harley Clause.

He was tired of the picture taking....

Harley and Kyle
This one is a one of the pictures on our card. We did a goofy theme this year with our reindeer antlers and Harley dressed as Santa.
This one of Harley and I is also on the card.
Here is our family picture in front of our tree.

Hope you enjoyed the pics!

Totally Awkward Tuesday

Tova Darling is starting up a great new meme for Tuesdays. Click here for the first Tova's Totally Awkward Tuesdays!

Here is the explanation from Tova:

"So, here's how it's going to work. Every Tuesday (or whenever you find yourself without anything else to post on a Tuesday), all of my readers (and even people who don't read my blog - I won't discriminate) can post a Totally Awkward story on their blogs. Then, leave a comment telling me you've participated, and also link to my blog from yours, and I'll include a link to your blog in my post - that way, we can all cringe/laugh /die of shame together!Your awkward story can be anything - something awkward you saw, you did, or you were unwittingly a part of; the most awkward moment of your week or the most awkward moment of your life. If this doesn't work out, it's ok with me. I'll just change the name to Tova's Totally Nonexistent Tuesdays."

Here we go!

Well, mine is a college story like Tova's as well. Let me set the scene here so you can grasp the full picture of my humiliation. Freshman Year in college. First day of classes. 8:00 am - First Class. First Day of First Class of College--EVER. Are you grasping?
So, I was a theatre major my first year and my first class was in a black box theater which is just a large room that is painted black and is set up for small play productions with limited or no set. They had on one side stadium seating with desks to create the audience and the performance space on the other side. I walk into the class. The seating area is a movable unit or platform with levels for the seats. I walk up the steps and grab a seat on the side. I am confident. I am a college student. I am excited. I am nervous. I am falling off the side of the platform onto the floor. My desk falls on top of me. (the fall was about 2 feet) and then my bag that I had set beside me fell on top of the desk which was still lying on top of me.
How is that for awkward?
Are you still laughing? Okay..Okay...have your laugh.
Okay...that's enough.

(Heather! You must play along! I already have yours. Picture the same black box theater.....are you picturing it? Kinesiology anyone?....)

The things we do for the men we love...

A few weeks ago my husband got a pair of tickets to go see the ESPN College Football awards. He was so excited and it was happening really close by. Isn't it funny how different the two sexes are. For me a big sale or some new shoes might render this kind of excitement (or maybe that doesn't do it justice either). How can I explain...Hmmmm..Oh yeah, I know! So, pretty much everyone I know has read the Twilight series....think about that premiere night gals..that is how excited my hubby was to have the privilege to go to these awards. You could say they were his Edward Cullen. So, it was a BIG deal.

Obviously it wasn't exactly my cup of tea as I don't follow sports but I could definitely appreicate the prestige and the celebrity of it all. I mean a red carpet is always fun! It was really exciting and cool to watch and be a part of anything that is live on TV and it was really touching to see these college kids winning these awards and watch them being appreciated for their hard work. The above picture is Chris Fowler of ESPN interviewing Tim Tebow from the Florida Gators as he won one of the awards.
The set of the show was pretty neat. We had to snap a few shots.
This is basically our view. There were about 30 general seats (which is where we were) and then the rest were VIP.
Kyle walked around before the show and looked at the trophies and took some pictures.
Here we are outside as we were coming in and some of the players were signing autographs on the red carpet.
Overall it was a pretty cool night. The coolest thing? Getting to go spend that time with my husband and seeing how much he really enjoyed it.

A Christmas Par-Tay!

This post is coming to you a little late..we had this Christmas Party with our little group of friends about a week ago and I am just now getting around to the post to share pics. It was a potluck get together and we all brought some treats. I brought Baked Ziti with Pesto (recipe here), A Peppermint Punch that I found on someone's blog and cannot remember where, and a cheeseball (recipe here).
Trust me..mine did not look this nice but it was yummy! Here is the Peppermint Punch. It was really tasty! In fact I am going to make it again for our family's Christmas gathering in a few days! We topped it with a dollop of whip cream and some crushed peppermint.

Here are the gals from the get together. We had so much fun at the party. After we ate we watched National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and then we played Cranium and had our gift exchange which was Dirty Santa (or Yankee Christmas or White Elephant...) Guess what she got? Hmmm...is it bigger than a bread box? No?
Is it a bread box left over from someone's wedding gift collection? Ding Ding Ding!
And these too lucky guests took home a felt snowflake throw blanket and some martini glasses! Here's Kyle with his prize; boxes of movie candy and a giftcard for two movie tickets!

This ceramic angel was in a bag and was broken! But there was a nice gift card inside! No body turns down giftcards!!
Another gift seemed to be the product of some bookshelf spring cleaning! Shakespeare anyone?
Overall it was a pretty fun night! We are definitely thankful to have good friends to share the holiday times with.

The heart of the giver makes the gift dear and precious. - Martin Luther

I was thinking today about Christmas and the things that I like most about the season. I love the family gathering and that we are celebrating Christ's birth. I love the traditional warm feeling that Christmas time brings. I love the sense of giving that fills everyone's hearts. We empty our change purses for the Salvation Army guy ringing a bell. We donate to a charity. We serve food at a homeless shelter or help a friend that is in need. This season is one of real magic and it is such a special time of year. As I decorated our tree this year I could feel the familiar tugs of Christmas as it crept in. And now here it is next week and I have that familiar childlike anticipation for all the festivities.
My favorite part of the Christmas gifting thing is shopping for others and making my lists (Boy do I love me some lists!...as you know by now)and wrapping them up. I love picking out something unique and fun for each person and letting them know how I feel about them by that act. I will not lie and say I don't care about gifts for myself only that it is the last thing on my mind as I wait anxiously for my friends and family to open their gifts from me. I know they are just things but it is my way of telling others how much they mean to me. I take time and think about each person - it is my favorite part of Christmas.

What is your favorite thing about Christmas?

Thirteen Things I will do to get ready to go home for Christmas.

In a little less than a week I will be flying off (with hubby in tow) to see my family for Christmas. I haven't been home since last Thanksgiving so I am really excited to see everyone. These are the things I will be doing to get ready for the trip!

1. Mailing all Christmas presents to husband's family who we won't see this Christmas and mailing gifts ahead of us to my home so we won't have to check baggage. This involves much waiting in line at the post office, packing peanuts, tape and wrapping paper.

2. I will be making about 5 lists for what to pack for the trip. The initial list. The second draft which will be revises and typed (yes, I am serious.) and then I will make additional lists on that list in pen as I will refuse to reprint the list. Then I will make a similar list for the hubster. After that I will make lists of things to do the day we leave.

3. I will be exercising in preparation for all the yummy food I will no doubt consume that is not on my diet plan.

4. I will be obsessing over the clothes I will bring and what I will wear at each event/ gathering. Yes, this is separate from the list making.

5. I will be obsessing over boarding Harley at the Pet Resort (yes, that is what it is called) and what toys and things he will be taking. Laugh if you will...it is very dramatic for me to leave him.

6. I will be finishing up a few books and plotting which book (s) I will take on the trip. I am sure I have been hoarding a juicy novel for the plane ride.

7. Mindlessly drifting through the days until we get to leave.

8. Getting excited over our little Christmas gift exchange we will do before we leave.

9. Getting my hair done.

10. Going to Christmas parties.

11. I bet I will make a list or two unconnected to the above mentioned lists but somehow connected with our departure.

12. I will talk to my Mom everyday (as per usual) about coming home and the things she has changed in her house and what we will do (play by play) for the few days we are home.

13. I will no doubt find ways to make things more difficult and hectic than they should be. i.e. packing, leaving Harley, getting to the airport on time, exercising....

Hope you enjoyed my list!

Leslie needs...

Liza over at Life with a Diva and a Princess did this little exercise on her blog and I thought it was pretty funny. So I did the same. What you do is put your name and the word "needs" into a google search and list the first ten things that come up. Here are mine! Go visit Liza to read her funny list and then feel free to copy and make your own!

Leslie needs a reality cheque
Hmmm...do I???

Inquisitive Leslie needs lots of attention
This might just be true. Does this sound make me sound like a puppy adoption advertisement?

Leslie needs a vacation
Yes Yes!

Leslie needs to run a ton of errands today!
I actually am done with Christmas shopping and all that so I really don't have errands today. Maybe this was me a few days ago?

Leslie lost her number to a tragic battery acid spill
Yikes! This does not sound good.

Leslie needs to catch up with Obama web savy campaign
I think the campaign is over. I love the word "savvy", do you?

Leslie needs the legal bug
I don't like bugs

Leslie needs to look outside the beltway to attract procurement professionals
you know me...I just naturally look inside the beltway...so close minded...

Leslie needs her space
Sometimes this is very true.

Leslie needs to learn to stop trying to do everything at once
This is wise advice. Thank you google.

Have fun!

Friday Fill-Ins

Friday again! I did this meme once before and I thought it was pretty fun when I didn't have anything interesting to post about. Enjoy and play along if you like! The bolded areas are my fill-ins.

1. Friends are the family we choose.

2. I am worried about my health; it's that of an 80 year old the last few years.

3. I'm ready for cold weather and gorgeous coats and scarves.

4. Burberry London is one of my favorite perfumes or aftershaves or smells.

5. The oldest ornament I have is the one(s) my hubby and I bought with our tree two years ago.

6. Take some warm rice, cinnamon, sugar and butter, mix it all together and you have breakfast.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to some chilling out after a busy two days and some much needed housework and gift wrapping, tomorrow my plans include shopping, baking and our Christmas Party with friends and Sunday, I want to sleep in and then relax and do nothing!

For more Friday Fill-in participants look here.

Thirteen things NOT on my Christmas List.

Thursday Thirteen

I almost did a list of things I want for Christmas and then I realized that that would be kind of boring. I thought this might be more fun. Here is my list of things I hope are not under my tree.

1. A meat of the month club membership
2. A 55 gallon fish tank
3. two tickets to a Britney Spears comeback concert (what?!)
4. a crate of blue cheese salad dressing
5. 15 packets of neon orange post-its
6. A pony
7. black stirrup pants
8. a pager
9. a bushel of grapefruits
10. a new calculator
11. a christmas tree themed sweater
12. the flu
13. wool lined pink croc boots

So....if you got me something on this list be prepared for my really polite fake smile followed by "I love it!" and then...yup.....I will totally regift it...cause that is just how I roll.

Happy Holidays!

Back Tracking.

Remember my Monday post on my dresser redo? Well, after chatting with my Mom today about what to decorate it with, etc..I mentioned that I was sad that I didn' t have a BEFORE picture for my blog. That is when my amazing and wonderful Mother reminded me that I had texted her a picture of it from the yard sale before I bought it to get her opinion. You know we always shop together even though we are 1500 miles apart!!
Anywhoo! I put the new pic in the post so you can get the FULL feeling of the redo!
Check it out! here

Busy??? Who me?

RANDOM QUESTIONS REGARDING CHRISTMAS THAT YOU ARE INVITED TO ANSWER EVEN THOUGH YOU HAVE FORTY (OR 100) OTHER THINGS THAT YOU REALLY SHOULD BE DOING

Tracy at Miller Manor shared this meme the other day and I just had to play along.

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags?
O Wrapping paper all the way! That is half the fun! I LUV me some ribbon so I go all out on ribbon and gift tags, etc. I feel like that is part of the gift! So basically my family always knows which gifts are from Moi!

2. Real tree or Artificial? Artificial. tree(S)

I have a faint memory of a few years with real trees growing up but mainly I am an artificial tree supporter. And pre-lit all the way. Although there is something to be said for the evergreen scent! My friend (who gets real trees) said "Go to Yankee Candle and get the evergreen candle and save the trouble of the watering and the needles". Perfect Solution!

3. When do you put up the tree?

Typically I believe in putting up the tree the weekend after Thanksgiving. This year my tree was up the weekend before Thanksgiving! I just couldn't wait!

4. When do you take the tree down?
I like to wait till New Years...stretch it out as long as I can! Especially this year (our first year in a house vs. an apartment) when we actually have some space!

5. Do you like eggnog?
I love eggnog. I really LUV eggnog ice cream.

6. Favorite gift received as a child?
Pink Barbie RV for Barbies. It folded out and it had little dishes with it and the front part became a convertible. Even now it sounds pretty cool...

7. Hardest person to buy for?
I really don't have one. I love gift giving and I always really try to do unique and thoughtful gifts if I can. I can't think of anyone who really gives me trouble.

8. Easiest person to buy for?

Kyle (my husband). Hands down the easiest person to shop for and the most fun person ever to give gifts to.

9. Do you have a nativity scene?
I don't. This is the first year my Christmas decor has been anywhere but on the tree.... Give me time though.

10. Mail or email Christmas cards?
Oh! You HAVE to mail them!! So much fun to get a card in the mail and at Christmas there are tons! I like to make ours at online design places like Shutterfly, Tiny Prints, or this year I used DaySpring. I love to do a photo too!

11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received?
It sang. It twinkled. It flashed. It was used in Dirty Santa one year later.

12. Favorite Christmas Movie?
White Christmas

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas?
mid November typically...but if I find things throughout the year that are perfect I will stash them for Christmas. I bought a couple gifts on my vacation to South Dakota this September.

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present?
Yup!

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas?

Divinity dessert

16. Lights on the tree?
white

17. Favorite Christmas songs?

Santa Baby and Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire (is that the name?)

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home?
Travel Travel Travel

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeers?

Dancer, Prancer, Donner, and Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Blitzen, Rudolph.....I feel like I am missing one.

20. Angel on the tree top or a star?
I actually don't have either. See my Christmas tree.

21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning?
Christmas Eve with Mom and Christmas Day with Dad.....

22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year?
working. As opposed to shopping, baking, listening to music, watching holiday movies, building snowmen, sipping hot cider...you get the idea.

23. Favorite ornament theme or color?
My tree is silver and red. I like when people do all one color (like white or ivory) and then the tree is all about the textures. I love really full overdone trees that are just bursting with decorations.

24. What do you want for Christmas this year?
To have a wonderful Christmas with all my family. All fun. No drama. That's how I like to roll.

Copy and paste on your blog if you want to play along! Be sure to leave me a comment so I can come and read your fun list too! Merry Christmas!

Happy Blogoversary to MOI!!!!

I just realized that today is my Blogoversary!!!
***Oops! It is my 3rd year! Time does fly! I like this picture too much to find a 3 one.***

As promised... (just a week late!)

So, here is my little dresser redo that I promised to do last week before disaster struck. We were a little shaken..but thanks to a nice relaxing weekend - we feel good and are back on our feet. Thank you all for your prayers.
So here is the story of this little lovely. The community across the street had a big neighborhood hosted yard sale and I was excited as soon as I saw the sign the Thursday before! I was loaded into the car and ready to go. I found some great deals and a few odds and ends for the house (lamps..a shelf..typ. stuff) and then my oh my! I ran into to this little beauty. Now I completely forgot to take a before picture (and trust me I was kicking myself for it!) so let me set the scene for you here. Bright pink body and bright yellow drawers. And the previous owner had spray painted the antique hardware pink as well. It had been in her daughters themed room. What did I see behind the pink and yellow paint? Potential! Here she is after I had sprayed some silver paint on the edges (for the antiquing accent I was planning) and suddenly realized I had no before pic.

****Edit Edit!! Here is the BEFORE pic that I miraculously recovered from a text message to my MOm. Pretty dramatic huh??? Yay! So glad I found it!****

Here are the lovely Banana colored drawers

Here is the once bright pink hardware that I spray painted silver.

Here she is in progress.
Yes Yes..I know I know..I painted it black.

Raise your hand if you are surprised.
And here she is in her new home in my kitchen/ hallway. I am not done fixing up the area but I had to post a pic. Soon she will be even more beautiful....
How about a close up??
Ta Da!!

Prayers

Hey all. I wanted to ask for some prayers this week. My husband was in the hospital on Wednesday with some heart trouble (he was in AFIB with an irregular heart beat). We spent all of Wednesday waiting for the doctors to find a way to get his heart regulated. They released him and he is doing okay (just worn out and scared) but there is no way to know what brought this episode on unless it starts to happen frequently (lets hope that is not the case!). Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers. We live far from family and sometimes health scares like this really shake us up.
He is doing well and went back to work today with orders to take it very easy and not get stressed or anything.

I will get to that furniture redo I have been anxious to share with you VERY SOON!

Have a good weekend everyone!

Making our own traditions...

Hello everyone! Hope you had a FABulous Thanksgiving Day! Ours was different but we made it as special and memorable as possible. Kyle cooked us a meal with all the traditional thanksgiving food! He is such an Allstar in the kitchen! Here he is setting the table.
I was DENIED entry into the kitchen so I settled for watching the entire Macy's Day parade and hanging out in my pajamas while he slaved away in the kitchen. Here is our little turkey cooking in the oven! Yum!!!
So..it wasn't like Momma does it but it was our own. Some of the food came from packages and not from scratch but you know what! It was delicious! We ate and ate and ate (and actually sat at our table!) and then we fell asleep watching Home for the Holidays. We woke up a looooonnnggg time later and had some pie and rewatched the movie since we had slept through it! I even made a pajama run to the store to get a newspaper to cruise the Black Friday deals!
We didn't actually get around to shopping on Friday until almost noon but we still found some great deals! I got really cheap ribbon and wrapping paper at Michaels and Old Time Pottery. And we scored some 4 dollars DVD's at Target ( I got Juno by recent fave movie!), we had some lunch and then showed up after the sale was over to get the big deal we had decided on. A new eliptical machine so we can get in shape! They gave us the sales price anyways though and we got the last one they had! We were psyched as we hauled it home to squeeze it into our office?
Sooooo..I know you are wondering if I have used it yet?..hee hee..everyone knows you can't start anything on a holiday weekend..or a Monday..hee hee..
Tonight is the night! I am gonna break it in and get this old body in shape! Or I am going to attempt to and pray that it doesn't upset my back.

Harley tried a little bit of turkey on Thanksgiving and basically slept and did nothing with us as we layed around.
On Saturday Kyle hung up our Black Friday deal icicle lights and I refinished a dresser I had found at a Yard sale the week before - it turned out gorgeous (check back tomorrow for pics!)
So, we really relaxed and enjoyed our holiday weekend. It was kind of rough coming back to work on Monday but I am pretty refreshed and filled with the holiday spirit. Bring on Christmas!!

Something to think about...

Emily at Chatting at the Sky posted this on her blog a few days ago and I wanted to do the same. It makes you really think about this time of year and what Christmas means to us.

'Twas the month before Christmas and all through the house...

Well, it's Christmas again and I have been busy decorating our house for the first time ever! It is much more fun to decorate a house than an apartment let me tell you!
There are little nooks and cranies and SPACE for decorations and I am so excited I could Pop!
Here is my fun sparkly tree! Thanks to some advice and a wee bit of push my friend convinced me I could be bit daring with my tree! I ran with it and now she (yes, my tree is a girl!) is decked out in glitter and as gorgeous as ever!

Meet Holly: (What?! You don't name your tree??)

I found some fun new ribbon and sparkly ornaments at Macy's last weekend (for 50% off!) and then I stumbled on the pieces in the top at one of my fave decor home stores Z Gallerie. I had to stop by Crate and Barrel for their funky ornaments too! Sooo exciting!

Lots more fun to come as I get some garlands and little nooks vamped up in holiday style. So stay tuned! And next week I hope to share a fun furniture redo with a piece I found last weekend!
